About Tasnim Jaman Raisa

Every time someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I had only one answer, “I wanna be a doctor”. Why? – it was simple, I loveeeed biology and chemistry and hated physics (still do), so the only thing I can be is a “doctor’. right?

What I didn’t know was that science isn’t just restricted to one thing! You can do a whole lot of things if you are into biology and chemistry. Such as doing a degree in pharmacy! Perfect combination of biology and chemistry where you study how different medicines (chemistry) react inside human body (biology)! So, I dropped my idea of becoming a doctor and started my journey to become a pharmacist!

During my time in university, I had the opportunity to take part in research work about growing human cells outside human body and testing new medicines on them to see how the cells will react to different medicines. The idea of growing human cells outside human body fascinated me so much! Think about it, growing living things like human cells on a plate. I became interested in research of “cell culture”. Scientist uses cell culture to do all sort of things from finding new cure to making vaccines! Working with cell culture will make me a scientist!

My curiosity of learning about cell culture brought me to Tasmania. University of Tasmania offers master’s degree where you can learn and work in cell culture and that is what I am doing now! I am currently at the beginning of my journey of learning and exploring how human cells (biology) react to new molecules made up of different chemicals (chemistry). Although I have changed my ambition of becoming doctor to pharmacist to now a scientist- one thing remains constant throughout my journey and that is my love for biology and chemistry.
