About Peter Osaigbovo

Have you ever tried growing a plant or caring for pets and wondered why some grow fast and strong while others do not? That’s the kind of mystery I work on, but with fish.

I study salmon, a popular fish farmed in Tasmania. Growing salmon takes a lot of effort and money. Some grow big and strong quickly, while others eat just as much but hardly grow at all. My job is to figure out why and how we can choose salmon that grow well, eat less, and become super tasty.

To do this, I measure things like fat, growth rate, and how much feed they eat. I use this information to help decide which fish should have babies and pass on their best traits. This research is important because salmon is healthy and in demand, but we need to produce more using less food and fewer resources while protecting the environment.

As a child, I didn’t always know I wanted to work with fish, but now I love that my work helps feed people while caring for the planet. Science lets me solve big problems and discover new things every day.
