About Onnida (Orn) Hempattawee

Think about the apps on your phone right now. You use them every single day, but have you ever wondered how they were made?

It all comes down to coding. Think of coding like learning a new language. Once you know some words, you can build sentences and talk to others who speak the same language. Programmers use the language of code to talk to a computer and tell it exactly what to do, just like your teacher giving you instructions in class!

Honestly, I didn’t start out knowing this was my dream. Even though I went to top schools, I felt totally lost after graduation. I didn’t like what I studied, so I tried studying German, and then I even became a kindergarten teacher. I absolutely loved working with the kids, but a sudden new rule meant I wasn’t allowed to teach anymore. I was completely heartbroken and had to quit.

Lost and starting over, I stumbled into an intense three-month coding bootcamp. Before this, I thought computer science was difficult and boring. But once I started typing my first lines of code and got used to it, I realised it’s actually like playing a massive puzzle game. You send commands to the computer, and it instantly builds a button, moves a picture, or changes colour right in front of your eyes. It felt like having a superpower to create something cool out of nothing. Whenever my code had a mistake (we call it a “bug”), it became a fun detective mystery to solve.

I fell in love with this coding world that I survived every tough test and became one of 20 programmers chosen to build a mobile banking app used by millions in Thailand.

If you feel stuck or don’t know what you want to be yet, that is completely okay. Science and tech aren’t just textbooks. They are playgrounds for exploration. Don’t be afraid to try, embrace the twists, and maybe you’ll find yourself learning to talk to computers too.
