About Fatima Mehjabin

Have you ever wondered about the genetic similarities between the brain of a fruit fly and the human brain?”

Their brains share about 60%-70% of our DNA! Well, I had no idea until I stepped into the fascinating world of fruit fly science. When I first interacted with the fruit fly team back at my old job, I became curious about how and why scientists study these tiny creatures.

In 2024, I decided to pursue this curiosity when I found a project which involves studying the genetics of the fruit fly brain to learn more about the human brain. A typical workday for me involves growing these fruit flies in the laboratory and looking at their brains under the microscope and then doing many experiments to find out more about their genetics.

My journey with science started when I was very young. My first introduction to science were through reading books and encyclopedias my mum got me. I became more and more curious about how science shapes our lives and I wanted to do something in science. When it comes to science, there is no limit to what you can do! If you ever have an idea, don’t be afraid to share with others or explore more on it. Don’t be afraid to take a plunge into the world of science. Science is after all like the ocean – full of mysteries and endless.
