About Maria Ibegu
Growing up I had always wanted to be a medical doctor. My love for maths in primary school and biology in high school, sparked my interest in how the human body works. Fast forward to several years later, I became a medical doctor with speciality in maintaining the liver and the digestive system.
The liver is one of the busiest organs in the body—it cleans our blood, stores energy, and can even repair itself if it gets damaged! My curiosity in this field led me to contribute to the scientific knowledge of the liver.
As medical doctor and a researcher, I study places in Tasmania, where liver diseases like hepatitis happen and how they affect people. I then use this information to help doctors and health services better support communities and keep people healthier. My goal is simple but powerful: better health for everyone, one step at a time.
What I enjoy most about my work is knowing that my research can help improve people’s lives. I also find inspiration in listening to music, which keeps me motivated and creative.
Through my work, I hope to make a real difference by helping improve health across Tasmania.
