About Jake Wilkinson
Have you ever wondered what water boiling in a pot and wind have in common? Me neither until I started my research. When I was younger, I always wanted to be an engineer; I never really wanted to be a scientist. But thankfully my degree let me experience a whole new side of science, and I am so glad it did because it is terrific fun!
My love of science started with a teacher I had in grade 10, we were doing different projects on an area of science that interested us. He suggested that I use some data from UTAS’ telescopes. These gigantic telescopes look at galaxies far far away and use that to see how the continents are moving on Earth! It is called ‘Very Long Baseline Interferometry’ if you are interested.
Now I am an engineer looking at different ways to treat diseases with magnets and rust! My day typically consists of sitting in an office with a bunch of friends and getting my laptop to solve lots of simple equations over and over again to simulate how water moves between the cells in your body.
If you are interested in science you should take every opportunity you get at school. When I was at school competing in STEM competitions took me to Italy to see the birthplace of da Vinci and it was going to take me to NASA in the United States of America as well before COVID ruined those plans. You’ll never regret trying you best and having a crack!
